Building A Library - Book By Book

Welcome Northside students! We are so excited to begin the planning process for developing the library for our Northside school community. A lot goes into building a library collection and creating a physical space that encourages inquiry, curiosity and a lifelong love of reading. As we work to prepare the space and the collection for the opening of the 2013-2014 school year we want to hear from you! Leave us a comment and share with us books you want to see in our library. Is there a series you couldn't put down? Is there a topic you can't wait to learn more about such as outer space or ancient Egypt? Do you love graphic novels? Who is your favorite character.....Pete the Cat, the Pigeon, Big Nate?? We look forward to creating a collection with our community members at heart and can't wait to have you each enter the doors of our library where together we will grow as readers, writers, and thinkers! Until then....happy reading!

Thanks for the message! Baseball in April is a great book and Gary Soto is one of my favorite Hispanic authors. We will most definitely have this book in our library. :) We will also have a graphic novel section in our library - with loads of great titles. I will try and include Asterix and Obelix! Our library is going to be such an awesome space to learn and grow -- I can't wait to see you there. :) Happy Reading!

Thanks so much for your feedback. Is there a particular American Girl doll that is your favorite? I always liked Samantha and Josefina. It has been such fun ordering nonfiction books and we have lots of great animals books coming along with some world history titles. Is there a particular time in history you enjoy reading about most....or a part of the world you want to learn more about? I can't wait to meet you at Northside and have you visit the library. Happy Reading!

  4. You should put some cook books in the library. We don't have any cookbooks at my school now so let's change things up and put some interesting recipes in to the Northside library.

I love that! We will most definitely have some fun cookbooks just for kids in our library. My husband is a chef so this is on area that we must have a good selection. ;) Perhaps we could create our own cookbook for Northside Elementary School and even put that in the collection. Looking forward to seeing you in our library!

Ah, yes.....Diary of A Wimpy Kid! That was one of the first series to get added to the booklist. At my former school those titles hardly even made it back to the shelf before someone was snatching it up. We will also have the Dork Diaries, Dear Dumb Diary, Big Nate and the Amelia's Notebook series if you like reading books written in diary format. Marvin Redpost is another personal favorite of mine so that too will be in our collection. Thank you for the suggestions and I have a feeling you are going to love what is in store for you at the Northside Media Center. Looking forward to seeing you soon!

Mercy Watson is another favorite of mine - he's such a silly pig! Could you imagine having Mercy Watson live in your home....things would get quite exciting. We will also have some Justin Bieber biographies - I mean honestly, would our library be complete without these available? Can't wait to see you in our library! Happy Reading.

I used to love ghost stories too when I was younger. We will be sure to get some of this genre - I am particularly fascinated with ghost legends of North Carolina! Bruce Coville is a great science fiction writer. If you like the Moongobble series you should try out some of his other famous stories such as "My Teacher Is an Alien"! I bet you will love it! I look forward to seeing you in August and I can't wait for you to visit the library!
