Book-A-Day 11: What's Special About Me, Mama?

What's Special About Me, Mama?
Written by: Kristina Evans
Illustrated by: Javaka Steptoe

For all the moms out there, this book will melt your heart and make you smile.  The storyline is a back and forth conversation between mother and child in which all his special qualities are highlighted as he yearns to know what makes him so special and unique.  From "amazing eyes that tell stories without any words" to "a laugh that fills the house with joy....just like when sun fills the sky on a cloudy day", this story reads like a tribute to her special love.  This story is simple, yet profound and the love is almost tangible by the end.

This would be a wonderful story to read aloud leading up to Mother's Day or to correspond with an All About Me unit.  A questionnaire could go home with each student that the parent fills out expressing the various qualities that make their child unique and special.  These responses could then be used for students to create their own "What's Special About (insert child's name)?" book.  The child could then fill the book with pictures of herself that highlight these attributes.  Wrap it up, put a bow on top and you have a beautiful Mother's Day gift to send home.

African-American Illustrator Javaka Steptoe has illustrated several other books for children, many of which we have in our library collection.  Click here to read more about this talented illustrator.
