Book-A-Day 9: Ron's Big Mission

Ron's Big Mission
Written by: Rose Blue & Corinne J. Naden
Illustrated by: Don Tate

What does it mean to be an ordinary hero?  Can a child with strong determination be a hero?  Does it require great deeds or can a simple, yet bold act be considered the act of a hero? At nine years old, Ron sets out on a mission to bring equality to one of his most treasured community spaces - the local public library.

Ron's Big Mission is a fictional account of a real incident in the life of Ron McNair that was recounted by his mother and others in his town.  Ron McNair was an African-American astronaut who lost his life when the Challenger space shuttle exploded in 1986.  But long before he was an astronaut hero, he was an ordinary hero in a big way in his small South Carolina town. This is a simple yet powerful story that can be appreciated by even the youngest of children.
